Short Description:

Envisioned as a ‘Sim City’ for real-life urban environments, CIVIS is poised to become the leading digital twin platform in the realm of city infrastructure. This innovative platform goes beyond mere collection, storage, and analysis; it brings to life the simulation of crucial urban infrastructures through the lens of Web3 technologies. With a focus on active community involvement and decision-making, akin to the decentralized ethos of DAOs, CIVIS is transforming digital maps into dynamic, interactive tools. These tools not only enhance strategic urban areas but also democratize urban development by tokenizing assets and integrating augmented reality. This unique blend of Web3 elements ensures a more engaged, transparent, and sustainable approach to urban planning, offering an unparalleled experience in managing and evolving our cities.

Problem Statement:

Modern cities are growing with rapid, uncontrolled expansion, further complicated by ever-changing regulations and governance. This chaos often leads to the loss or obfuscation of essential urban data, resulting in disjointed and inefficient urban development.

In the rapidly evolving landscape of modern cities, we encounter challenges such as uncontrolled expansion, fluctuating regulations, and decentralized governance, common in the Web3 ecosystem. This often leads to fragmented and inefficient urban development, with essential data becoming lost or obscured. The disjointed nature of this growth mirrors the challenges faced in the burgeoning Web3 space, where information can be decentralized but not efficiently utilized or integrated.

Solution:

Cities of the Future (citiesofthefuture.org) has, over the past five years, compiled an extensive database of global urban projects, mirroring the data aggregation seen in Web3 networks. We have meticulously collected city-specific data, creating comprehensive project profiles that include photos, diagrams, digital maps, and YouTube videos. The evolution of this project involves the development of a map-based platform, CIVIS, which overlays various urban infrastructure networks, integrating Web3 technologies like blockchain for data integrity and tokenization of assets.

Our initial focus will be on six key pillars of urban digitalization:

1. **Mobility:** Digitalizing streets, sidewalks, stations, and bus stops, along with digital transport schedule.

2. **Waste Management:** Mapping waste collection points and recycling centers.

3. **Energy:** Overlaying energy distribution systems and streetlights.

4. **Water:** Integrating water distribution systems and rainwater collection.

5. **Environment:** Digitalizing green areas, trees, conservation areas, and parks.

6. **Security/Safety:** Mapping safe crossings and surveillance cameras.

CIVIS aims to not only streamline urban planning but also to bring the principles of Web3 to real-world applications, creating a synergy between physical urban infrastructure and digital blockchain technologies. This will lead to more cohesive, efficient, and participatory urban development, reflecting the decentralized, secure, and community-driven ethos of the Web3 world.

Implementation Plan and Roadmap:

Next Steps with Gitcoin Grant 19:

  • Phase 1 – : Development of a Web App Pilot, focusing on interface design, user experience, and interactive visualizations.
  • Phase 2 – : Creation of a Mobile App Pilot, with an emphasis on environmental and mobility aspects.
  • Phase 3 – : ‘Vallejo-I Digitalization’ – Digitally mapping Mexico City’s Vallejo-I, a technology and innovation district.

The Future Vision:

Our ambition extends to digitally replicating cities worldwide, fostering continuous updates, and providing analytical insights into global urban projects. With CIVIS, we aim to transform urban planning and enhance community engagement, striving for cities that are efficient, sustainable, and resonate with their residents’ needs.

Key Goals:

  1. Develop an evaluation system to score projects based on our six pillars and various design strategies and technologies.
  2. Introduce tokenization of urban infrastructure projects for real-world applicability.
  3. Maintain a free, accessible platform for users.

Here’s a structured list that outlines the various aspects of the CIVIS project and how each contributes to enhancing the Web3 community, along with the potential impact of your existing community:

Background :

Since our inception in 2016, we’ve evolved from a blog to a vibrant online community with over 28,000 subscribers. Our “urban radiography” projects in Mexico City exemplify our commitment to using advanced tools like drones and video processing for urban analysis. These initiatives underscore our data-driven, practical approach to enhancing city planning through innovation.

Our flagship projects, known as “urban radiography,” involve collaborations with the governments of Mexico City. In these projects, we focus on digitizing complex urban intersections to meticulously analyze the flow of pedestrians, vehicles, and public transportation. By employing sophisticated tools like drones and advanced video processing, we extract vital data that is crucial for understanding and improving urban traffic dynamics. By simulating different scenarios we can better predict how cities will react to changes. Our approach is data-driven and centered on practical solutions, demonstrating our commitment to enhancing city planning and development through innovative methods.
